GEAR SECOND
Gear Second is a technique that enhances the user's strength and mobility. It was first seen in Luffy's fight against Blueno.[1]

Overview

Gear Second Speed
The increased speed granted by Gear Second.
This technique involves Luffy speeding up the blood flow in all or selected body parts, in order to provide them with more oxygen and nutrients. This makes him much faster and more powerful. The technique uses even more oxygen and energy, using up more food and causing Luffy to pant heavily.[1] The increase in his metabolism causes him to be hungrier than usual or even have a paralysis type effect after prolonged use of it, like in the second fight with Rob Lucci, where Luffy was only able to lie on the floor. Lucci, one of the first of Luffy's opponents to witness it, compares the process to doping. Doping is adding more red blood cells to the body part/s, which in turn allows for greater delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body part/s. In Luffy's case, his organs and blood vessels are made of rubber allowing them to expand and contract at greater rates without tearing.[2] Essentially Luffy increases the blood flow by forcing more blood through his blood vessels thus increase his fighting ability. This mode's enhancements to Luffy's physiology giving him the ability to use a new, stronger set of techniques which are generally the same as his old ones, but are so fast that even a skilled assassin would have a hard time actually seeing them. He developed this ability after encountering CP9, and watching them use Soru.[3] This is called Gear Two in the Viz Manga, Second Gear in the official simulcast subs and in the FUNimation dub.
I've thought of a way to fight with all my strength so I won't lose to anybody! So I won't ever have to lose anybody. You won't be able to catch up with me anymore. All of my techniques have evolved by one step.
— Luffy's determined answer to Blueno in their fight[1]

Before the Timeskip

Prior to the timeskip, Luffy would initiate this technique by using his leg as a pump to increase the blood flow in all of his body parts. As a result, all of his body parts become stronger and faster. The technique used more oxygen and energy, using more food and caused him to pant heavily during use. He has been able to heavily damage some of the strongest individuals in the series while this technique was active, such as Magellan and Blackbeard. When this technique was in effect, his entire metabolic rate went so high that his sweat vaporized rapidly making his body look as if it were steaming and, in the anime, his entire skin turns slightly pink and shiny from the increased blood flow. He also says almost all of his attacks in English as opposed to Japanese.

Gear Second Initial Pose
Luffy's initial position for Gear Second, in the anime.
At first, Luffy could only use Gear Second for a short period of time, because the accelerated speed at which nutrients are used up depletes his body rapidly. The mechanics behind this enhancement thus also mean reduced strength and agility after prolonged use, as pointed out by Lucci when Luffy's attacks start losing their speedy edge because with all his nutrients running low, having a faster blood flow would be useless as there are no nutrients to use. Due to this, as also pointed out by Rob Lucci, Gear Second hacks away at Luffy's life force dramatically, increasing a chance of having a much shorter lifespan because he is starving his body, though Luffy rebukes it, saying that it does not matter as long as he saves his friends.[2]
After Gear Second wears off, Luffy can recover quickly by replenishing his body's nutrients by eating meat. Later in the Impel Down Arc, Luffy demonstrated a more excessive use of his Gear Second ability without such exhausting costs like his fight with Rob Lucci, as well as being able to activate it at conveniently brief periods of time to save his stamina and strength reserves for longer fights. This is possibly because of Luffy's mastery over the form along with his desire to save Ace, and possibly the large amount of food he ate in Newkama Land at Impel Down.[4]
While not in the anime and manga, in the 7th movie of the series which takes place before the Water 7 arc, Luffy briefly and unknowingly activated Gear Second during his fight against Ratchet, the antagonist of the film, when the sheer pressure of the machine Luffy is forced to hold up unknowingly causes his legs to end up pumping his blood flow. He then defeated Ratchet with a Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka, although he thought that it was a regular Gomu Gomu no Bazooka and was even surprised at the amount of force it had produced.

After the Timeskip

New Control Over Gear Second
Luffy's new control over Gear Second.
After the timeskip, it appears that Luffy has refined his control over this technique as he has now been shown capable of activating it by pumping blood in only one particular part of his body: the trigger works very fast as he is capable of activating Gear Second in an instant and does not even have to assume his usual stance to initiate it. Thanks to this newfound control over his technique, Luffy now has the ability to select which body parts Gear Second will be active in, instead of having to activate it in his entire body;[5] though the anime depicts this as a particular body part undergoing the pumping motion, such as his arm.
With this new mastery over Gear Second, combined with Busoshoku Haki, he can now easily destroy a Pacifista[6] and take down a fishman as large as Wadatsumi with a single Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol.[7] Furthermore, using a combination of Haki and Gear Second, Luffy is somehow able to ignite his limbs to perform even more devastating and explosive attacks.[8]

Techniques Utilized

With the enhanced metabolism, Luffy is able to perform the Rokushiki technique Soru, allowing him to move at disappearing speeds. His prowess of it has surpassed that of Blueno's.[9]
Most of the techniques in this mode are named the same as the regular attacks with "Jet" added after the "Gomu Gomu no" prefix, though often times, Luffy will omit this prefix when using several attacks in succession. The known named techniques that are used by Luffy so far in this form are as follows:

Pre-Timeskip

Luffy Defeats PX-5
Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol (ゴムゴムのJET銃 (ジェットピストル) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Pisutoru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Pistol/Gun"): Luffy delivers a Gomu Gomu no Pistol so fast that the fist's movement is invisible, and it truly seems like he shoots his opponent, except that the resulting impact is not akin to an actual pistol, but to a small hand-held cannon and powerful enough to propel the unlucky recipient several meters away. The incredible speed both makes the strike far more powerful, and harder to dodge. When using this technique, he points his other hand out to aim at his target. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation dub, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Pistol. This was first seen being used against Blueno.[10]
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Stamp (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) スタンプ Gomu Gomu no Jetto Sutanpu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Stamp"): Luffy delivers a Gomu Gomu no Stamp, with the same effect as the Jet Pistol. In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Stamp. This was first seen being used against Blueno.[10]

Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka
Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) バズーカ Gomu Gomu no Jetto Bazūka?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Bazooka"): Luffy charges at his opponent at high speed, and delivers an incredibly fast and strong Gomu Gomu no Bazooka. In the Viz Manga, FUNimation dub, and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Bazooka. This was first seen being used against Blueno.[10] It was apparently powerful enough to break through Blueno's strongest Tekkai technique, Tekkai: Go, as well as Boa Marigold's Busoshoku Haki-enforced guard. During the battle against Moria in his Shadow's Asgard form, Luffy demonstrated being able to use this move to propel himself from mid-air, allowing him to perform this attack continuously.[11]
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Whip (ゴムゴムのJET鞭 (ジェットウィップ) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Wippu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Whip"): Luffy delivers a 'Gomu Gomu no Muchi, so fast, that only the slipstream is visible. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation dub, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Whip. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci in order to protect Franky from him.[12] Unlike the original Muchi, the kanji is alternately read in English instead of Japanese.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Bullet (ゴムゴムのJET銃弾 (ジェットブレット) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Buretto?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet (Gun) Bullet"): An extremely fast, close-range punch with very great force. When attacking head-on, the stretching of the original Bullet along with the resulting snapback seem to occur almost simultaneously at once, making it virtually inescapable. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci.[13] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation dub, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Bullet.
  • Gomu Gomu no Twin Jet Pistol (ゴムゴムのツインJET銃 (ジェットピストル) Gomu Gomu no Tsuin Jetto Pisutoru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Twin Jet Pistol/Gun"): Luffy punches with both arms simultaneously. Visually, the move only differs from his normal Gomu Gomu no Bazooka in that instead of doing an open palm strike, he has clenched fists which leave two knuckle shaped imprints on his foe. As since the move hit so fast, the air from it really looks like Luffy is literally firing two pistols. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci and is one of the few moves unique to Gear Second[13] (unless the anime-only regular "Gomu Gomu no Twin Pistol" is included). In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Twin Jet Pistol.

Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling
Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling (ゴムゴムのJET銃乱打 (ジェットガトリング) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Gun Battering"): This is Luffy's strongest technique in Gear Second. Luffy stands still, bends forward and moves his arms upwards at speeds which they can no longer be seen, leaving only jet streams in their place, very much like how the Jet Pistol looks. This results in an effect comparable to Foxy's Kyuubi Rush, except that Luffy does not need to make use of Noro Noro photons to slow down his target in order to accumulate the hits. The hits land so fast that, after a volley, they seemingly connect simultaneously. The circles of air bursts from the punches surrounding Luffy, resemble the many barrels of an actual Gatling gun. However, due to the large amount of energy it uses, Luffy cannot sustain it for long, although the time it is used is longer than the regular Gatling.[14] During his fight against the combined efforts of Marigold and Sandersonia, Luffy demonstrated an omnidirectional version of this move by falling on his back, then, while lying down, launches a rapid barrage of powerful high-speed punches from the ground, effectively nullifying both sister's attacks.[15] This was first used to defeat Rob Lucci. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation dub, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Gatling.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Rocket (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) ロケット Gomu Gomu no Jetto Roketto?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Rocket"): A Gear Second version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Rocket technique. After grabbing onto something with stretched out arms, Luffy instantly propels himself forward with blinding speed. This was first seen being used against Moriah. In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Rocket.[11]

Mihawk Cuts Buggy
Gomu Gomu no Jet Migawari.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Migawari (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) 身代り Gomu Gomu no Jetto Migawari?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Scapegoat"): Somewhat of a gag move where Luffy stretches his arms to grab a person (an ally, an opponent, or otherwise a simple bystander) from afar then pulls them close to where he is to block an attack that Luffy would otherwise be incapable of surviving on his own. Using his Gear Second's speed, Luffy can capture himself a shield very quickly. He has a normal (non-Gear Second) variant of this move where Luffy sends the recipient spinning towards the assaulter to preoccupy them as he makes his escape. This was first seen being used by Luffy on Buggy, using the latter as a human shield against Dracule Mihawk.[16] This is called Gum-Gum Human Shield Jet in the Viz Manga and Gum-Gum Jet Human Shield in the FUNimation subs.

Anime Uses

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Lance (ゴムゴムのJET槍 (ジェットランス) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Ransu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Lance/Spear"): A Gear Second technique that first appeared in the anime, however time after, Luffy makes the same move with its official name. Luffy delivers a very fast Gomu Gomu no Yari that seems to connect instantly with his opponent. This was first seen in the anime being used against Blueno.[17] Unlike the original Yari, the English name is read as "lance" instead of "spear", despite the two techniques having the same lone kanji (槍).
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Missile (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) ミサイル Gomu Gomu no Jetto Misairu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Missile"): A Gear Second technique that first appeared in the anime. Luffy stretches and grabs onto an enemy's body. Then, he very quickly retracts, crashing into the foe. This was first seen in the anime being used against Blueno.[17]
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Axe (ゴムゴムのJET斧 (ジェットアックス) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Akkusu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Axe"): A Gear Second technique that first appeared in the anime. Luffy stretches his leg vertically and then crashes it down on his opponent, unlike the usual version however, rather than merely smashing his foot into the enemy the speed at which it is done is so quick that rather than attacking the area directly in front of him, his Jet Axe strikes several meters in length, thus increasing its range. This was first seen in the anime being used against Lucci.[18] Unlike the original Gomu Gomu no Ono, not only is the attack read in English, but it removes the "sen" (battle/war) kanji (戦).
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Rifle (ゴムゴムのJET回転弾 (ジェットライフル) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Raifuru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Rotating Bullet"): A Gear Second version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Rifle technique that first appeared in the anime. The winding of the original Rifle along with its snapback happening almost at the same time as Luffy speeds towards the target makes this move impossible to evade. This was first seen in the anime being used against Blueno.[17]

Post-Timeskip

Like his normal and Gear Third forms, Luffy named his new techniques (after the timeskip) with a gun and artillery concepts theme.

Gear Second Normal Attacks

Gomu Gomu no Jet Hammer
Gomu Gomu no Jet Hammer.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Hammer (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) ハンマー Gomu Gomu no Jetto Hanmā?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Hammer"): The Gear Second version of Gomu Gomu no Ozuchi, which was not used since Luffy's battle with Don Krieg. Luffy wraps his legs around his opponent and, at an extreme speed, smashes him into the ground. Unlike the normal version, Luffy does not twist, and then un-twist his legs during the execution of this technique. Although in the anime he twists his legs but does not untwist them. It was first used against Vander Decken IX while Luffy was tied up.[19] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum Gum Jet Hammer. Unlike its original version, it is written in katakana and read in English.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Mace (ゴムゴムのJET鉾頭棒 (ジェットメイス) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Meisu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Halberd Head Pole"): Luffy kicks his opponent with extreme speed while falling and spinning. This was first used against Caesar Clown.[20] In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Jet Mace. The kanji's literal reading is "Bouzubou", which may be a personal kanji term for a mace/club.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Spear (ゴムゴムのJET槍 (ジェットスピア) Gomu Gomu no Jetto Supia?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Spear"): Simply a more powerful, Gear Second version of Gomu Gomu no Yari, only it is now read in English as "spear" instead of "lance". It was first seen being used on the floor in Luffy's fight against Monet.[21]

Gear Second Haki Enhanced Attacks

After the timeskip, Luffy has improved his Gear 2nd techniques via imbuing them with Busoshoku Haki. All of these attacks follow the naming concept of a bird of prey (most commonly Hawk).

Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk
Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk.

  • Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk (ゴムゴムの火拳銃 (レッドホーク) Gomu Gomu no Reddo Hōku?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Fire Pistol"): A Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Bullet. After entering Gear Second, Luffy uses Busoshoku Haki to harden his arm entering in Gear Second Busō. He then stretches it back like Gomu Gomu no Pistol. When cocked back, his arm ignites, releasing a stream of fire. When the attack hits, it creates a fiery explosion even underwater and deals immense damage. The Redhawk is a type of revolver made by the gun manufacturer Ruger, and the kanji name of this attack (literal reading is "hikenjuu") pays tribute to Ace's Hiken (火拳銃 means both "Fire Pistol" and "Fire Fist Gun"); the anime furthers this tribute by showing a flash of Ace when Luffy used this technique. This was first used against Hody Jones in his transformed state after the air bubble engulfed Noah.[8] However, chronologically, it was first shown in use, almost instinctively (Luffy was shown surprised after he made such a move), during the TV special 3D2Y, in Luffy's final fight against Byrnndi World. In FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Red Hawk, while in the Viz Manga it is called Gum-Gum Fire-Fist Pistol Red Hawk.

Buso Koka Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling
Luffy using Buso Koka: Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling on Monet's Kamakura.

  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Gatling (ゴムゴムの鷹銃乱打 (ホークガトリング) Gomu Gomu no Hōku Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Hawk Gun Battering): A Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling. Luffy uses Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling while using Busoshoku: Koka on his arms to enhance the power of his punches. He first uses this against Caesar Clown, but it gets blocked by Monet using her Devil Fruit ability to create a wall.[22] It was originally simply known as Buso Koka: Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling (武装硬化 ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) 銃乱打 Busō Kōka: Gomu Gomu no Jetto Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Armament Hardening: Rubber Rubber Jet Gun Battering"), but was renamed to go with the "Hawk" naming theme when Luffy used it against Donquixote Doflamingo.[23] In the anime, he uses this against Bilić, but misses due to Elizabeth's speed. In the FUNimation subs, this was originally called Armament Hardening: Gum-Gum Jet Gatling and in the Viz Manga it's now known as Gum-Gum Hawk Gatling. The kanji's literal reading is "Taka Juuranda".

Hawk Rifle
Luffy Using Gomu Gomu no Hawk Rifle against Don Chinjao

  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Rifle (ゴムゴムの鷹 (ホーク) ライフル Gomu Gomu no Hōku Raifuru?): A Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Rifle. After entering Gear Second, Luffy uses Busoshoku Haki to harden his arm. He twists his arm to create a spinning punch and increase the power. This was first used against Chinjao at Corrida Colosseum, and was sufficiently powerful to make Chinjao bleed, despite the fact that Chinjao was using Busoshoku Haki on his stomach to minimize the damage.[24] Unlike the prior versions, the "rifle" part is not written in kanji.
  • Gomu Gomu no Eagle Bazooka (ゴムゴムの鷲 (イーグル) バズーカ Gomu Gomu no Īguru Bazūka?): A Haki-enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka. Luffy hardens his arms with Busoshoku Haki and stretches them both backwards. The arms then deliver a great impact to the opponent after Luffy blasts them forwards. This was first used against Donquixote Doflamingo.[25] In the Viz Manga this is known as Gum-Gum Eagle Bazooka. The 'Eagle' in the technique's name is possibly derived from the semi-automatic pistol, the IMI Desert Eagle. The literal kanji reading for "eagle" is normally "washi", or "shuu".
  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Whip (ゴムゴムの鷹鞭 (ホークウィップ) Gomu Gomu no Hōku Wippu?): A Haki-enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Whip. Luffy imbues his entire leg with Busoshoku Haki, and then swipes it towards the target as an elongated kick. This was first used against Donquixote Doflamingo.[26] Though in the anime, Luffy used this move without entering Gear Second.[27] The literal kanji reading is "takamuchi" or "you'ben", and just like Jet Whip the kanji is spoken/read in English unlike the original Gomu Gomu no Muchi.

Anime Only Attacks

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) バズーカ Gomu Gomu no Jetto Bazūka?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Bazooka"): Luffy used the Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka with clenched fists instead of palms and imbues his arms with Busoshoku Haki. He first used this against Shuzo in the Z's Ambition Arc.[28]
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Cannon ( Gomu Gomu no Jetto Kyanon?): Luffy used the Gomu Gomu no Jet Bazooka with clenched fists instead of palms. He first used this against Don Chinjao in Corrida Colosseum to counter his Buto Kaiten.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Stamp Gatling (ゴムゴムのJET (ジェット) スタンプガトリング Gomu Gomu no Jetto Sutanpu Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Jet Stamp Gatling"): Luffy delivers multiple Gomu Gomu no Stamp attacks with the same power and speed as if performing a Jet Gatling. This was first seen being used against Don Chinjao.[29] Unlike the original Gatling and its variations, this is written in katakana.
  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Bullet: Similar to the Jet Bullet, it is reinforced by Busoshoku Haki, for extra power. Luffy used this attack against Issho, when the Admiral blocked his escape.[30]
  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Axe: Similar to the Jet Axe, it is reinforced by Busoshoku Haki, for extra power. Luffy used this attack against Issho, when the Admiral blocked his escape.[31]

Video Game Only Attacks

  • Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk Gatling ( Gomu Gomu no Reddo Hōku Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Fire Gatling/Gun Battering"). Luffy is first seen using this attack in screenshots for 'One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3. Luffy covers both his arms with Busoshoku Haki, and combines both "Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk" and "Gatling". However, the attack never made its way into the game.
  • Gomu Gomu no Heat Magnum (ゴムゴムの炎神銃 (ヒートマグナム) Gomu Gomu no Hīto Magunamu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Flame God Gun"): A team combination attack used by Luffy and Sabo to defeat Donquixote Doflamingo in the alternate ending of the Dressrosa Arc that appears in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3. After Kuzan freezes Doflamingo's legs place, Sabo and Luffy stand side-by-side, Luffy activates Gear Second and prepares a Gomu Gomu Red Hawk while Sabo prepares Moeru Ryusoken: Kaen: Ryuo. Luffy then says Gomu Gomu no while Sabo says Heat, then they combine their fire-based punches into a single fireball (through the fire manipulation abilities of the Mera Mera no Mi) as they both shout Magnum. The attack is immensely powerful and capable of burning through Doflamingo's Off White threads and knocking the Shichibukai through a wall. However, despite this it apparently lacks the power of the Gomu Gomu no King Kong Gun that defeated Doflamingo in the canon storyline, as Doflamingo was only momentarily knocked out by this technique, though it was enough for Doflamingo to admit defeat and flee. The literal reading for the attack is "Enshinjuu".
    • An alternate version of this technique is performed by Luffy (Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk), Ace (Hiken), and Sabo (Moeru Ryusoken: Kaen: Ryuo) appears at the end of the game's introductory cutscene.

GEAR THIRD

Gear Third is another powerful form that is first hinted at during the climax of the fight between Luffy and Blueno,[1] and first used, but not witnessed, to knock down a steel door in Enies Lobby.[2] It was first fully seen in Luffy's fight against Rob Lucci.[3]

OvervieW

Luffy corks his mouth with his thumb, bites into his thumb joint (making a small opening) and blows very hard into it, which inflates his arm. He is then able to transfer the air through his entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. Luffy blows so much air into his body that when they are all focused on a single limb, they become the size equivalent to (or greater than) that of a giant's, if anything resembling Oars' size. Used with his already-strong physiology, this apparently gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with far greater strength, but he sacrifices mobility for this strength, as his limbs are now so large that Luffy has trouble moving. This is called Gear Three in the Viz Manga, and Third Gear in the FUNimation sub and dub.
Gear Third is generally used when raw physical strength is needed, the bones are the key difference between this form and his old "Gomu Gomu no Fusen" move, where his balloon form was soft and squishy like a regular balloon, whereas the inflated bones are very hard, similar to an inflated car tire. Unlike the normal Gomu Gomu no Fusen technique, bullets ricochet off of Gear Third instead of bouncing off. The bones being much harder also mean a lot of compression of air takes place when using Gear Third, making Gear Third not just a "for-show" move as Lucci initially thought, but like a giant mace of astounding mass when used in attacks. Because of Luffy's raw strength, he is able to move his gigantic arm with ease.
In between his attacks, Luffy brings the air back to his chest and then shifts it into another body part. The downside is, the lag time in which it takes Luffy to transfer and re-channel the amount of air trapped inside his bones can be very disadvantageous.

Before the Timeskip

Starting Gear Third Pre Timeskip
Luffy inflates his arm to begin Gear Third before the timeskip.
Before the timeskip, while in Gear Third, it proved quite difficult for Luffy to move while part of his anatomy has been converted to gigantic proportions, making the Gear inadvisable to use against opponents capable of moving at high speeds (like Lucci) or in an enclosed place as he is leaving himself vulnerable to attack, which is why since his battle against Rob Lucci, Luffy tends to only activate Gear Third against massive and often slow-moving targets whom he likes to assault with his Gear Third moves coming from high above in mid-air, where the said attacks could not be obstructed.[3] To deactivate Gear Third, Luffy leaves the form by exhaling heavily, which can cause him to be propelled backwards.

Gear Third Side Effect Pre Timeskip
Luffy after deactivating Gear Third.
The deactivation of Gear Third brings about shrinking, which is a negative side-effect for Luffy due to the massive expansion undergone prior to release. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in Gear Third mode.[2] This shrunken form has shown little to no ability to stretch at all, and it has been shown that Luffy loses an incredible amount of strength when he kept hitting Lucci's face to no effect. The best strategy Luffy could use, while waiting for himself to return to normal, is to run and hide from an opponent for the duration of the shrinkage. Another strategy is only using Gear Third for a few seconds for only one move so his shrinkage is minimized. But during the Impel Down Arc, Luffy demonstrated using his Gear Third with great speed. Being fast enough to defeat Jailer Beasts, who possessed Soru-level speed. During the Whitebeard War, this drawback was not shown during every use, perhaps being glossed over by the many different battles taking place all at once; but the anime still includes the drawback.

After the Timeskip

Gear Third Activation Post Timeskip
Luffy's new-found control over Gear Third.
After the timeskip, as with Gear Second, Luffy seems to have obtained better skill at utilizing Gear Third. Previously, Gear Third would increase the size of the majority of Luffy's arm, thus reducing the speed of the attack in exchange for a powerful impact. However, Luffy after two years can seemingly control where the air is stored within his limbs, where his fist becomes large and instead of the air being equally distributed throughout his arm, an equivalently large mass forms behind the fist. This allows a majority of Luffy's arm to remain as it is, permitting him to stretch it, thus allowing him to attack and withdraw much faster than pre-timeskip. He was seen being able to enlarge his right fist while inside a Yarukiman bubble (where there is limited air supply) rapidly upon engaging against the Kraken, demonstrating the use of infusing Busoshoku Haki into his colossal-sized arm to enforce its durability and defeat the sea monster. Luffy is confirmed to have overcome his weakness of shrinking when deactivating this Gear, after inflating both his arms and using "Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling" on Noah for a prolonged period of time and not turning into his chibi form.
Luffy has also shown to use this form defensively in battle, as seen when he fought Admiral Fujitora. In this battle Luffy enlarged his arm using Gear Third (though the enlargement was comparatively small compared to usual), and applied Busoshoku hardening to it in order to use it like a shield against the Admiral's powerful attacks. In this way, it was capable to defend against Issho's slashing attacks.[4]

Techniques UtilizeD

Most of the techniques in this mode are named the same as the regular attacks with "Gigant" added after the "Gomu Gomu no" prefix. "Gigant" is German for "Giant". In some techniques like Gigant Whip and Gigant Axe, Luffy uses the English name of the technique instead of the Japanese name, saying "Axe" and "Whip" instead of "Ono" and "Muchi". The known named techniques that have been used by Luffy so far in this form are as follows:

Pre-Timeskip

  • Hone Fusen (骨風船 Hone Fūsen?, literally meaning "Bone Balloon"): Luffy inflates his body by blowing air into his bones. This is done by biting into his right thumb, presumably cutting it open down to the bone, and then blowing air directly into the opened bone. This technique seems to give Luffy a sturdier defense than the regular balloon, since bullets now ricochet off of him instead of bouncing off of him. Due to this form having a disadvantage of moving about, he can transfer his air into his torso, and then launch himself with his "Gomu Gomu no Rocket" technique. This was first fully shown in Luffy's battle against Rob Lucci.[3] In the Viz Manga, this is called Bone Balloon

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol
Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol (ゴムゴムの巨人の銃(ギガント・ピストル) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Pistoru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Pistol/Gun"): Luffy delivers a Gomu Gomu no Pistol with extreme force due to the larger size of his fist. This was first fully seen being used against Rob Lucci.[3] Its sheer power was able to fling him from the Bridge of Hesitation on to a Buster Call Battleship. In the Viz Manga, FUNimation dub, and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Pistol. The kanji's literal reading is "Kyodai no Juu".
  • Gomu Gomu no Rocket (ゴムゴムのロケット Gomu Gomu no Rokketo?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Rocket"): A Gear Third version of Luffy's normal Gomu Gomu no Rocket. While using this move, Luffy's chest bones are inflated, and bullets ricochet off his body. This is not explicitly named as a "Gigant" move. This was first seen being used to propel Luffy onto a Buster Call battleship in pursuit of Rob Lucci.[5]
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Axe (ゴムゴムの巨人の斧(ギガント・アックス) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Akkusu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Axe"): A Gomu Gomu no Ono with even more power due to his enlarged foot and leg. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci. Its sheer power is able to damage and create a hole in the deck of a Buster Call Battleship.[6] In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Axe. The kanji's literal reading is "Kyodai no Ono", and like the Jet version of Ono, it lacks the "sen" (war) kanji (戦).
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Whip (ゴムゴムの巨人の鞭(ギガント・ウィップ) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Wippu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Whip"): Gomu Gomu no Muchi with more power due to his enlarged foot and leg. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci. Its sheer power is able to damage the mast of a Buster Call Battleship.[6] In the anime, Luffy used a haki-infused version against Doflamingo. In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Whip. The literal kanji reading is "Kyodai no Muchi".
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Bazooka (ゴムゴムの巨人のバズーカ Gomu Gomu no Giganto Bazūka?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Bazooka"): A Gear Third version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Bazooka attack. To create this attack, Luffy inflates both his arms by biting both his thumbs and blowing into them. With both his arms inflated to large proportions, Luffy then delivers the attack onto an opponent the same way he regularly does with a normal Gomu Gomu no Bazooka attack, except with much greater power. This was first seen being used against Oars to break his spine.[7] In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Bazooka

Luffy Jet Shells Moria
Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell (ゴムゴムの巨人のJET砲弾(ギガント・ジェットシェル) Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jetto Sheru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Jet Shell"): This was Luffy's strongest technique at the time. While he is still in Gear Second, Luffy goes into Gear Third with Hone Fusen. With the combination of Gear Second's high speed and Gear Third's air within his bones, Luffy launches his air filled body and rams into an opponent like a large cannonball. This move is quite reckless, as Luffy suffers both from the excess burn on his body from Gear Second, and the difficulty of moving his body from Gear Third. This was first seen being used against Gekko Moriah while he is in his Shadow's Asgard form. In the Viz Manga, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Jet Shell.[8] The literal kanji reading is "Kyodai no JET Houdan", with "houdan" being a Japanese term for a gun shell.
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Rifle (ゴムゴムの巨人回転弾(ギガント・ライフル) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Raifuru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Rotating Bullet"): Luffy activates Gear Third to expand one of his arms and then use it to launch a giant version of the original Gomu Gomu No Rifle at a target with greater power, drilling hard into the unfortunate target.[9] This attack is strong enough to destroy the heavily-armored Pacifista, and was first seen being used to defeat PX-4 on the Sabaody Archipelago. The fist produced in this attack is approximately the same size as the entire body of the giant Luffy uses it to defeat. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Rifle. Unlike the variations of Jet Rifle, this version of the attack is written in kanji like the original base version; the literal kanji reading is "Kyodai Kaitendan/Kaitendama".

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Stamp
Luffy's Gigant Stamp combined with Mr. 3's Giant Candle Wall.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Stamp (ゴムゴムの巨人のスタンプ Gomu Gomu no Giganto Sutampu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Stamp"): Luffy activates Gear Third and expands his foot to deliver a giant version of Gomu Gomu no Stamp with greater force. Incidentally, this was first used in conjunction with Mr. 3's Giant Candle Wall to push it back. This was first seen being used against Magellan in Impel Down.[10] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Stamp
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Fusen (ゴムゴムの巨人の風船 Gomu Gomu no Giganto Fūsen?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Balloon"): Luffy activates Gear Third and expands his torso to create a giant version of his traditional Gomu Gomu no Fusen, with a much sturdier defense. This move was strong enough to cushion the impact from a massive adversary and was first used to protect Ace and Mr. 3 from a punch of Sengoku in his giant form.[11] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Balloon. The literal kanji reading is "Kyodai no Fuusen".

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Gatling (ゴムゴムの巨人の銃乱打(ガトリング) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Gaturingu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Gun Battering"): Luffy activates Gear Third and expands both his fists to deliver a giant version of his powerful Gomu Gomu no Gatling technique. This technique is completely exclusive in the fighting game, Jump Ultimate Stars (using Luffy's strongest battle set a la his 8 Koma version, and acts as this version's Special Move A) and One Piece: Pirate Warriors (during the final fight against Akainu to deliver the final blow) but it does not appear in either the manga or in the anime. While appearing counter-intuitive with using increased mass and rapid-firing (especially since in Jump Ultimate Stars, Luffy does not move forward as much during the attack), the idea was incorporated post-timeskip. The kanji's literal reading is "Kyodai no Juuranda".

Post-Timeskip

Like his normal and Gear Second forms, Luffy named his new techniques (after the timeskip) with a gun and artillery concepts theme related to an animal. Having learned to make the air "sit" in a specific part of the body, his Gear Third attacks are now both faster and stronger than they were prior the timekip. Furthermore, he no longer shrinks after using these attacks.

Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun
Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun.

  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun (ゴムゴムの象銃(エレファント・ガン) Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Gan?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Gun"): The Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol. After activating Gear Third, Luffy will also implement Busoshoku: Koka into his attack, turning his arm black. Just like his Gomu Gomu no Bullet, Luffy launches his attack at his enemy with great destructive power. However, the Gear Third's air only fills the end of his arm, giving him a giant fist with an elephantine round wrist. It is named after an elephant gun, a large caliber firearm used to hunt elephants that used black powder at first and then started using smokeless powder. This attack was first seen underwater against the Kraken.[12] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Elephant Gun. The kanji's literal reading is "Zoujuu".

Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling
Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling.

  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling (ゴムゴムの象銃乱打(エレファント・ガトリング) Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Gun Battering"): After enlarging and imbuing both his arms with Busoshoku Haki in a similar manner as Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun, Luffy performs his Gomu Gomu no Gatling, which, with the heavily enforced arms, causes massive damage. Since the bulk of the air sits in his forearms and fists and not in his upper arms, it allows him to punch and pull back rapidly. This technique was first seen to defeat Hody Jones, as well as breaking apart the falling Noah.[13] In one of the specials, it was shown that he can also perform this technique with a single arm while retaining enough power to cause extensive damage to a large Marine base.[14] In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Elephant Gatling. The kanji's literal reading is "Zou Juuranda".

Luffy Defeats Caesar Clown
Luffy defeats Caesar Clown with Grizzly Magnum.

  • Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum (ゴムゴムの灰熊銃(グリズリー・マグナム) Gomu Gomu no Gurizurī Magunamu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Grizzly/Ash Bear Gun"): A Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Gigant Bazooka. Luffy gets distance away from his opponent and activates Gear Third on both his arms simultaneously. He then runs towards the target with both his arms still static behind him before leaping in the air. While flying toward the enemy at a great speed he implements Busoshoku Koka into his arms, turning them black. He retracts his arms, and launches his attack with a great destructive power. The technique is named after the Grizzly Win Mag made by the gun manufacturer L.A.R. This attack was first seen being used to defeat Caesar Clown.[15] In the FUNimation subs, this is called Gum-Gum Grizzly Magnum. The kanji's literal reading is "kaiyuujuu"; it should be noted that the kanji used for "ash bear" is the Chinese term for a grizzly bear, and is not applicable to Japanese as the proper Japanese term would instead be "Hai'iroguma" (灰色熊, lit. Ash-Colored Bear).
  • Gomu Gomu no Thor Elephant Gun (ゴムゴムの雷将象銃(トール・エレファント・ガン) Gomu Gomu no Tōru Erefanto Gan?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Thunder General Elephant Gun"): An enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun, first seen when Luffy used it to defeat Chinjao in the Corrida Colosseum, restoring the latter's head to its original drill-shaped form in the process.[16] The attack differs from a regular Elephant Gun in that Luffy launches himself into the air with Gomu Gomu no Rocket first, before striking, discharging electricity when it lands. The attack is named after the Norse hammer-wielding god Thor. Thor in a technique name happened for the first time in the One Piece Film: Strong World, where it was a lightning strike enhanced Gigant Axe. The kanji's literal reading is "Raishou Zoujuu".

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Hae-tataki (ゴムゴムの巨人ハエたたき Gomu Gomu no Giganto Hae-tataki?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Fly Swatter"): After enlarging his hand, Luffy slaps his opponent with his palm. He first used this against a flock of Kung Fu Mynahs in Episode 542, the second One Piece x Toriko Crossover special. "Hae-tataki" (also written as 蝿叩き in kanji) is the term for a fly swatter, literally meaning "fly thrasher".

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Gatling (ゴムゴムの巨人のJET銃乱打(ガトリング) Gomu Gomu no Giganto Jetto Gaturingu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Jet Gun Battering"): In One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World, post-timeskip Luffy uses a variant of Gigant Gatling from Jump Ultimate Stars, mixing it with Gear SecondBusoshoku: Koka, and Elephant Gun. The kanji's literal reading is "Kyodai no JET Juuranda".
  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Storm (ゴムゴムの象暴風雨(エレファントストーム) Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Sutōmu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Storm (Rain)"): Used as his Secret Attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle X. Luffy activates Gear Third and covers both of his arms with Busoshoku Haki, and combines both Gomu Gomu no Storm and Elephant Gatling Gun. The kanji's literal reading is "Zouboufuu'u"
